Podcast interview with Atos Black Belt Tim Sledd

Podcast interview with Atos Black Belt Tim Sledd

A little interview I did with Tim Sledd. Tim is a solid teacher (i’ve learned plenty from him), was my first purple belt match, and was a blast to talk with. Well I guess I drilled him with questions more than casual talking. He talks about a couple of the personal struggles in particular that hes dealt with in BJJ, that I’ve also dealt with. It was cool to hear another BJJ lifer’s take on dealing with things like ,affiliation changes, and figuring out question, “why do I keep training?’

Its worth a listen if you have some time.

Interview with Ezra Lenon. A guy from the midwest who received his black belt in 5 years and recently competed in the ADCC. I also know from personal experience that he is a tough dude to run into for a tournament. We had some fun back and forth matches. He shares some highlights and low points of his personal BJJ journey and shares a few tips for training and competitions. Thanks to Ezra for doing the interview.

Interview with David Avellan

I did an interview with David Avellan right before the ADCC. I had planned to publish it before the tournament but sadly I was unable to upload the file while I was with Brent for his Bellator fight. Anyways, go to Matwind.com to check it out or click the link above.

Sorry for being slow with posts and check out my podcast

So I received a lot of positive feedback from the last few posts I’ve done with the 10 years in BJJ series. I apologize for not having the next part in the series posted. I’ll have the next post up later this week. I’ve just been super busy with a little side project I’ve been doing. The side project is a podcast and I’ve been interviewing tons of black belts from all over. The purpose of the podcast is to interview different high level BJJ practitioners and draw inspiration, motivation and advice from their own experiences. I just released the first episode today and I chose one of my interviews with a black belt from the midwest. I did this for a few reasons. Mainly because he is a highly skilled black belt and the fact that he has personally faced a fair amount of adversity and did not have the ideal starting conditions. Even with these sorts of obstacles he has still managed to become a skilled black belt and is able to do BJJ full time. I knew James previous to this interview but even with that I personally learned about him as a person and a BJJ player. The interview gave me some perspectives on things and when you listen to it I hope it does the same for you and that it gives you something you can use for your own BJJ journey.

Training with a purpose

Just finished another interview for the podcast project I have coming up. I’m having so much fun and learning so much about these awesome people. I hope everyone has as much fun listening to these podcast episodes as I’m having making them. The launch date for the podcast is September 1st, 2013 in case you’re interested. Even though the podcast is still a little over a month out, I figured I would take a minute and share 1 little chunk of advice that seems to keep coming up during these interviews, and its something I’ve blogged about before. The reoccurring tip that these black belts talk about when it comes to improving at BJJ is . . .

“to train with a purpose”

I know sometimes its fun to roll and not focus on anything, but If you feel like you’re not growing on the mat or that you are hitting a plateau. Then take some advice from some high level guys and train with a purpose! Give yourself a goal to achieve during your training session, try to hit a new move you’re working on or try and improve the weak areas of your game. If you’re a good bottom guy, try and work your top game. If you’re a good sweeper, try and submit from the bottom. You get the idea. Hitting those goals will build some positive momentum mentally and improve your game by focusing on improving in a particular area.

Hope everyone’s training goes well and I hope you hit whatever goals you set for yourself!
