7 BJJ Half Guard Sweep Drills & Techniques

Today’s video is a Half Guard sweeps drilling video. This is some of the things I’m working on with my classes and I figured I’d share them with you as well.

In the video you’ll see 7 different Half Guard sweeps or techniques used. And the way we do it is after the sweep or technique is used the other person will regain their half guard and then the sequence restarts. This keeps the action moving and keeps it more engaging for both people.

If you’re a Half Guard player or trying to get better at the position, I hope the sweeping drills help.

If you struggle passing Half Guard then today’s video is for you. In today’s BJJ technique video I’m going to give you a simple strategy to chew on. It’s simple, but effective. I’ve been using this strategy ever since I was a BJJ White Belt and have used it effectively even as a Black Belt.

The key to making this work (as I’ll show you in the video) is to set up multiple threats starting with the armlock. This could be a keylock, kimura, straight armlock, whatever you’re best with.

What happens is the person will be forced to focus on the submission threat which then diverts attention away from retaining the Half Guard position.

If you don’t already do this, you should. It’s been one of my most effective ways to pass guard and it’s something you’ll see a lot of people doing in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.

Hope the video helps.

Skinny BJJ Beanpole Struggling to Hold Top Position on Bigger Guys

Today’s video is in response to a question I got from a small guy who’s struggling with big guys during his BJJ training. He’s a self-described bean pole who’s struggling to hold top position against his training partners.
He says he tries to hold mount a lot. And he also says that since he’s a good guard player he often feel comfortable to just sit back and allow his opponent’s to come up on top.

In today’s BJJ strategy video I’ll give you a few ideas to chew on regarding this situation in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, because it’s common. Keep in mind I’m not a small man. But I’ve still been with plenty of men much larger than I am who can throw me off if I get out of position.
I’ve also been coaching for over a decade and have seen how my smaller students gain the advantage over their larger opponents at time.
Now before I end this. Let me share this. I think any position can be used if done correctly. But I also believe that certain positions are easier than others for certain situations. In particular, I don’t think mount is the best position against people that are much larger than you. In the video I’ll explain why.

2 Useful Micro Adjustments To Catch & Finish Chokes in Back Mount

In today’s BJJ technique video I show some small adjustments you can make using the collar to get more chokes from Back Mount. These small adjustments in BJJ are sometimes called things like micro adjustments or micro transitions. Which to me means that you have a big move happening (macro) and then you’re making smaller moves (micro) within that movement.

For example, in the video you saw me do the basic chair sit technique to Back Mount. Which is one of my favorite fundamental movements in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. Within that large movement/transition I show a smaller hand grip change that you could consider a micro adjustment or transition.
The 2nd option is a simple collar feed which I use anytime I’ve got a good snag on collar but can’t quite get it to the finishing position.
Hopefully these small adjustments are useful to you with your ability to submit people from the back in Brazilian Jiujitsu.

Fix Your BJJ Mount Escape with These Step-by-Step Position Tips

Do you have plenty of techniques to escape Mount but yet you still have trouble escaping the position? If so then this video may be useful to you. In many cases it could be your setup and the sequence you use to execute your escape. In today’s BJJ technique video I show some details on escaping Mount with a focus on the strategy of it rather than just the technique itself. This should hopefully help you have a better understanding as to the “why” you’re doing what you’re doing in this Brazilian Jiujitsu position.

The basic sequence I show in the video looks something like this:

– Free the leg to have a bridge

– Bring hands together to setup frames and get inside control of the position

– Begin to setup mount escapes

This has made my escapes from Mount so much better and has also helped out many of my Brazilian Jiu-jitsu student’s with their escapes from a tight Mount position as well.

If you’re struggling to escape Mount then I hope this video is useful to you.

Reaping in BJJ

Reaping In BJJ (Protect Your Knee & Avoid DQ in IBJJF)

I’ve had a lot of request regarding reaping in BJJ competitions. Whether it’s to avoid being called for reaping if you use Single Leg X or if you want to defend against someone reaping your leg.

In this video I show some basics on what reaping in BJJ looks like and keeping your knee safe, defending the reap and avoiding allowing your position to get you in trouble in an IBJJF BJJ tournament. I also touch on how the reap wasn’t always a thing with a quick “Back in the day” story from Old Man Chew. But seriously it wasn’t. As a White and Blue Belt I never heard of being called for reaping. However we would get called for Can Openers and Neck Cranks. Wrestlers used them all the time and they got banned. And the refs would call them super quick.

And I feel like the reap position is similar. It’s not that hard to defend but since we’ve defined it as “bad” we stop using it, many newer students don’t know how to defend it and it probably won’t be a thing in a few years as education grows. Hope the video is useful to you.

Thanks for watching.

Half Guard Sweeps getting Mauled by Overhook in BJJ

If you’re a Half Guard focused BJJ player or ever get into the Dogfight position then you know how troublesome a well placed overhook can be.

In this video we’re going to get into this position and look at a couple of options. Today’s BJJ video request from Gui who is playing Half Guard in his gym but is getting mauled by the overhook / whizzer when he attempts to come up for the sweep.

In the video I give 2 different options that can be used to counter the Overhook.

The 1st is simple limp arm / lazy arm. I probably use this technique the most. It’s just such a strong attack to throw into the mix.

And I’ve used it over and over again. Both in BJJ training in the gym and competitions. Another option is a roll under sweep using the “regrip.”

If you’ve watch any of my Half Guard technique videos you’ll see me showing the re grip sweep over and over again. And it’s a great counter to Wrestlers and those types who try to use overhooks to counter sweeps and movements.

This is because they are literally giving you the grip you need to make the sweep effective. So, if you’re struggling from the Dogfight position or getting smashed in this position with the overhook. I hope the techniques are helpful.

Escape a Heavy Mount in BJJ with a Sweep ( Single X Sweep )

Escape a Heavy Mount in BJJ with a Sweep ( Single X Sweep )

Being stuck in the bottom of mount in BJJ when someone is applying low heavy pressure on you isn’t fun. In a lot of cases if someone is very low it can be difficult to set up the proper frames to escape.

And the longer they’re in the position the worse off you are. Escaping mount is one of my better areas. Not because I purposely got better at it.

But out of necessity. I spent the first several BJJ matches at Black Belt getting swept right into mount and was forced to escape. The key to my success with mount escapes comes from tight framing, hips and using them together.

In many cases I will see someone use these two elements separately but not always together. Combining the two is a great combination for mount escapes in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. In this video I give a brief rundown of how to use a tight frame even if the person is super low and putting heavy pressure.

To the point where it’s difficult just to get the frame in the first place. From there I show how to use the hip drive to get the weight off of you so that you can escape.

Lastly, I show one of my favorite transitions from this BJJ mount escape which is to the single X position and using a sweep. Even if you don’t like the sweep I show.

Framing Tips are Huge When Escaping Mount in BJJ

Learning how to use your forearm and the structure of your body to push comes in handy in those spots where you just don’t have a lot of space.

Hope the video is helpful!

leg locks in bjj

Are Leg Locks in BJJ More Dangerous Than Other Submissions?

Are Leg Locks in BJJ really that Dangerous? Some people avoid them like the plague citing that leg locks are so destructive that they shouldn’t almost not be practiced at all. As if they are some evil section of grappling that should be avoided at all costs.

But in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, as I think we all know, all submissions are dangerous and have the potential to alter someone’s life in a very profound way. I’ve met people who have had permanent caused by things like armbars or rear naked chokes (improperly applied), which many unanimously agree are “safe” submissions to use in BJJ training.

Rolling is a Serious Game

Because of this inherent danger in everything we do on the mats. I think it’s always important to remind ourselves of just how serious the game of Rolling can actually be. We have a blast and it’s so much fun. But when it comes time to finish our training partners in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. We have to be smart.

Accidents happen in BJJ and people get injured. It’s just how it is and there is no way around it completely. But one goal we should always keep close to home as a training partner is to do everything in our power to ensure our partners leave in the same shape they came in. So if they were healthy and uninjured walked into the gym. They should be that way walking out.

Aversion to Leg Locks in BJJ

Many people have a certain aversion to Leg Locks in BJJ. I know that during my first few years of BJJ. A lot of coaches at this time talked about the techniques as if they were evil and just bad! It reminded me of the Dark Arts of Harry Potter or something.

But overtime they’ve become more and more prominent in BJJ and because of this more and more people are practicing them as part of their Brazilian Jiujitsu. I believe their prominence was caused by the gaping hole that was created by the lack of people in Brazilian Jiujitsu actually focusing on the lower body submissions.

I personally had to let go of the consistent idea that I had about leg locks in BJJ. That idea was mainly that they were too dangerous.

I’ve actually found through years of coaching that with proper knowledge they’re just about as safe as anything else. In fact, inside our gym over the last 3 years I’ve seen less injuries related to Leg Locks since we started practicing them on a weekly basis.

People are more sensitive to them now, they know how to escape and they know how to apply them with control. They know when to tap and how to adjust their body through the technique.

I know you may not agree. But I hope you at least consider the way you think about Leg Locks. Are they you’re own thoughts based on your own experiences, or are they the beliefs of another person?

Because through my experience as a BJJ Black Belt and Coach. Whether we are talking about an Armbar, Kimura or a Heel Hook in BJJ. . . they are all dangerous.

Thanks!
