Gordon Ryan’s Unshakeable Trait You Want for Your BJJ Game

In today’s BJJ Q&A video I answer a question from a young guy who’s struggling with aggression and anger in Jiu-jitsu. He says that whenever people are aggressive with him or rough during rolling, he tends to get angry, and it makes him overly aggressive. He says that once he’s in this mode, it’s not a good thing. His technique gets sloppy and so he wants to stop it from negatively affecting his Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training.

So he sends the message to me to ask if I or any of my students have ever had this problem. And if so, what can he do about it?

The answer is of course yes, it’s happened to me and plenty of my students. And if it’s something that’s happened to you then I hope this video gives you some useful ideas on how to stop the issue.

WTF is an Adult Green Belt in BJJ ?

In today’s video I answer a question from Josh who is an adult Green Belt in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. Now some of you may be a little confused since Green Belts in Jiu-jitsu are usually saved for teenagers and kids (which I’ll explain).

But with that, he’s getting ready for a BJJ competition, and he wants to know what to compete since there are no adult Green Belt divisions.

So in this video I share some ideas from my own experience as a former adult Green Belt back in 2004 when I was a newer student in BJJ.

I also tell a story about a stinky white belt. Not a person white belt. . . my actual belt.

Just Injured a Training Partner (Am I Responsible for Medical Bills?)

If you injure someone during Jiu-jitsu training, are you responsible? This is the heart of the question I answer in today’s BJJ Q&A video. The question was asked by several different people recently, so I wanted to touch on the topic.

Injuries suck and it’s one of the downsides to training Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. . . or any sport really. But at the same time, even if you don’t train you’ll probably experience some injuries and wear and tear on the body regardless.

But either way, in today’s BJJ video I’ll give you some ideas to chew on regarding injuries in the gym and if you’re responsible for your training partner who was hurt during an accidental situation.

Black Belt Ready to Leave His Gym After Beating His BJJ Coach

Today’s Q&A comes from a BJJ Black Belt who feels homeless. Basically, he’s involved in a business partnership with his coach and is starting to surpass him during rolling. This would normally be seen as a good thing. A job well done by the coach. But our friend, Bob, says that it’s creating a toxic environment.

He says that because of this he has a place to train, but it doesn’t feel like home.

So, in this video I gives some ideas to chew on for possibly mending the relationship and keeping things together.

How my Nerdy Gamer Past Affects my BJJ Training 20+ years later

One of my guilty pleasures is listening to game designers talk about how they create video games. As a kid I was a big gamer, building computers and all that stuff. Long before it was a cool thing to do. I also find it fascinating from a business perspective of how you create something that keeps people coming back for a long period of time.

And for this video I share some ideas about a video game designers’ creative habits and how they could be implemented in a similar fashion for our BJJ training.

Story of 2 College Wrestlers in my Gym (Why Only 1 Got His Blue Belt in BJJ)

In today’s video I share some ideas on how I do belt promotions at my BJJ gym. To illustrate the answer for the person asking the question I share a story about 2 college wrestlers who trained at my gym. 1 got his Blue Belt while the other didn’t. There’s a lot of factors that led to this. But 1 in particular was the reason for withholding the promotion from 1 and then giving it to the other.

Keep in mind, at the time, both people were able to hang with a Black Belt in top positions.
