why so many rules

BJJ Competitions Don’t Have what Soccer, Judo & Most Sports Have

Why don’t BJJ competitions have the same rules like other sports? This is today’s question.

It’s a good one and can be a perplexing thing to newcomers to BJJ. I mean if you look to other sports they usually have the same or similar rules. Whereas in BJJ each organization seems to have slightly or very different rules. This is true for the highest level of BJJ like IBJJF or ADCC and even at the lower levels of grappling.
And in the video I’ll explain the basics as to why BJJ competitions don’t have the same unified rules across the board. I’ll also use Judo as a comparison and explain why I personally like Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu the way it is rather than trying to get every tournament under 1 umbrella.
Hope you enjoyed the video.

BJJ Black Belts & MMA Fighters Test Out Bad Self Defense Techniques

Recently while on Youtube the algorithm targeted me for a video showing a “Jiujitsu vs Karate” takedown. The technique was close to an actual wrestling technique used but missing some key steps to make it effective. I went down the rabbit hole and saw several techniques labeled “self defense” techniques that in my opinion as a martial artist of 20 years and a former professional fighter, wouldn’t work.

In this video Ramsey and I have a little fun trying out some of the techniques. Btw, if you like these kinds of videos. Ramsey has several on his channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/RamseyDewey

Obviously, I’m not taking myself to seriously with this whole thing but many of the techniques are awful and shouldn’t be practiced with the idea that they are going to work.

Combat style martial arts aren’t necessarily realistic for the streets. But they are realistic for an altercation with a person who is 100% resisting.

From my own experience and from those of my students in law enforcement or just those who had to defend themselves. BJJ, Boxing, Judo, Sambo, Wrestling, Kickboxing, etc are incredibly effective martial art for defending yourself in a hand to hand situation.

Anyways, hope you enjoyed the video.

Can’t Finish the Knee Cut Pass in BJJ? Switch to this Pressure Pass Instead

In today’s video you’ll get to watch a clip from one of my BJJ classes where I teach a guard passing technique I like using more than the cut through pass. The pass connects with the knee cut / cut through pass as you’ll see in the video.

Now the reason why I like this pass better in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is that the cut through usually doesn’t feel great on my knees. When someone holds onto the ankle if I try to finish the knee cut pass it seems to tweak my knee. So if I go for the cut through pass and it doesn’t work I’ll switch off to this pressure pass instead.

Hope the technique gives you some ideas for your next BJJ training session.

This Destructive Mindset Will Hold You Back in BJJ & Pretty Much Everything

In today’s video I answer a question I get from a lot of wrestlers in BJJ. And in the video I’ll share an idea that I think will help any former wrestler getting in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. But I also think it’s an important idea for ANYONE getting into BJJ that’s been good in another sport before.
The idea comes from the works of Joseph Campbell who’s work I absolutely love.
Check out his work if you haven’t before. Hope you enjoyed the video.

Is BJJ Worth All Injuries ?

Today’s video comes from a newer BJJ White Belt who’s wondering if BJJ is worth all the injuries. He says he’s curious because he sees all the “old timers” in his gym and realizes they’ve all had an injury or two.

And as a young guy who’s just getting into Brazilian Jiu-jitsu he’s wondering, is it worth it?

Now while this question is super subjective. I try to give the young guy something to think about regarding the ideas as to whether or not BJJ is worth the toll it can potentially take on the body.

Versatile BJJ Armlock to Counter Opponents Who Crowd Your Full Guard

Today’s BJJ technique video is from one of my Brazilian Jiu-jitsu classes where I showed one of my favorite setups and armlocks from Full Guard / Closed Guard.

The focus of the setup is to get the person’s hand on the mat or on the outside of your body which will allow you to snag the arm and get a catch on the shoulder. From there I show a straight armlock and then transition to corkscrew armbar.
And even if you don’t like the techniques shown you can still use the setup for lots of submissions and attacks from full guard.
Hope the video gives you a useful idea to bring into your next training session. And hopefully it helps you secure an extra arm lock or two.

How To Play Your Mistakes The “Right” Way (Idea from Jazz & BJJ)

Today’s Sunday video (which is my not-so-BJJ videos) I share an idea I recently heard on the Lex Frimad podcast. It’s an idea about a situation that happened with some famous Jazz musicians.

I’m a big fan of comparing other forms of art to Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and the combat arts. In many cases they’re littered with parallels. Jazz for instance dips heavily into improvisation which is something that happens with us in martial arts. In many cases we have to improvise on the fly.

And the lesson from the Jazz story in the video has a parallel that I find true for my BJJ training and life off the mats.

You can listen to the podcast episode here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cC1Hs…

Thanks for watching and I’ll chat with you next time.

Skinny BJJ Beanpole Struggling to Hold Top Position on Bigger Guys

Today’s video is in response to a question I got from a small guy who’s struggling with big guys during his BJJ training. He’s a self-described bean pole who’s struggling to hold top position against his training partners.
He says he tries to hold mount a lot. And he also says that since he’s a good guard player he often feel comfortable to just sit back and allow his opponent’s to come up on top.

In today’s BJJ strategy video I’ll give you a few ideas to chew on regarding this situation in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, because it’s common. Keep in mind I’m not a small man. But I’ve still been with plenty of men much larger than I am who can throw me off if I get out of position.
I’ve also been coaching for over a decade and have seen how my smaller students gain the advantage over their larger opponents at time.
Now before I end this. Let me share this. I think any position can be used if done correctly. But I also believe that certain positions are easier than others for certain situations. In particular, I don’t think mount is the best position against people that are much larger than you. In the video I’ll explain why.

How To Avoid Injuries When Rolling with Wild New White Belts in BJJ

Today’s video is an idea that came from questions I received from both BJJ White Belts and higher belts who are rolling with brand new White Belts in their gym.

Basically, the White Belts are injuring people on accident or being super spazzy and feeling bad about it.

On the flip side the higher belts are worried about getting injured with the less experienced students.

So in this video I share an idea for higher belts in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu to consider when rolling with new BJJ students. It’s an idea I learned the hard way after getting elbowed, kicked, slammed over the years. But if you take the lesson home it’ll allow you to roll with newer students to help teach them and at the same time avoid being injured.

Thanks for watching and I hope the video helps.

oil check

Blue Belt Gets a “4 Finger Oil Check” at BJJ Competition

Today’s video is a question about dirty grapplers in BJJ competitions. By dirty grapplers I mean people who are willing to cheat and bend rules in order to win.

The question comes from a Blue Belt who was recently competing against a tough wrestler and got oiled checked when he sunk in a submission.

Now I was skeptical because I like to assume most people wouldn’t do something like this. But after seeing a video and picture of it I have a hunch this person knew exactly what they were doing.

Anyways, in the video I share my own experience of dealing with dirty grapplers, how I responded, how I would respond differently now and how I would encourage anyone to respond if someone does something that is flagrantly cheating.

Hopefully the video helps.
