Effective Double Leg Takedown for BJJ Beginners (No Knee Drop!)

In today’s video I show a simple takedown for BJJ I’ve used several times in Jiu-jitsu competitions and plenty of times during rolls in the gym.

The takedown is also relatively safe as it doesn’t require you to drop to your knee. I know this is something that worries many Brazilian Jiu-jitsu practitioners who aren’t used to the movement or worry it will cause them to get sprawled on and smashed. It uses a front headlock to setup a basic high double leg takedown.

I also included a short clip from 1 of my BJJ matches so that you can see the technique and what it looks like during a competition match.

Hope you enjoyed the video!

Thanks for watching.

How to Make Your Grips Last Longer & Think More During BJJ Rolling

Today’s video is a short Q&A video from Origin’s BJJ Immersion Camp in Maine. During the sessions this week I got a chance to speak with hundreds of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu practitioners who watch the videos, listen to the podcasts and so on. If you’re one of them, it was cool meeting you!

A couple of blue belts came up to me asking questions about their grips burning out and getting tunnel vision during their rolling. After listening to their situation, I gave them some simple advice. Something that helped me with my BJJ.

Now the advice is very simple and can be applied by anyone from white belt to black belt. But it doesn’t make it easy! Like anything else in BJJ, you have to put things into action with practice.

So, if you struggle with your grips burning out during BJJ competitions and rolling, then I hope the video helps.

Every BJJ Competitor Learns & Understands this Idea

Recently I got a question from a young guy who said he let his BJJ coach down.

He said that this last he’s been competing in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and winning tons of gold medals. He said recently, he was getting ready for a competition, one of the biggest ones in the country and leading up to it his teammates and coaches were very confident in his abilities to have success at the tournament.

He goes out to the competition and loses first round, by 2 points, to the person who would eventually go and win the bracket.

He sends me a message saying that “I let my coach down, what do I do?”

I asked him WHY he believed he let his coach down. His reply was “I did not live up to the expectations everyone had for me.”

So, I questioned him. Asking him, based upon which actions from them, his coaches and friends, made him feel like he let them down.

You might be surprised at his response, and honestly, this is probably how most coaches feel. If you’re ever feeling let down about a loss at a Jiu-jitsu competition, then maybe this conversation between myself and the messenger can be useful to you.

Common Feud in BJJ is THE Age-Old Martial Arts Argument

Today’s question comes from a Brown Belt in BJJ, named Aaron, who also comes from a Wrestling background, and apparently has injury plagued hands.

With that in mind, he says his favorite way to train BJJ is No-Gi.

Recently however, he decided that he wanted to pursue more Gi training, going up to his coach, letting him know about his injuries, and was looking for some grip fighting tips from his coach.

After the talk with his coach, Aaron says that his coach threw in a little dig. Saying:

“By the way, the Gi is more technical than No-Gi…”

Apparently, this led into a whole rant, and may have triggered Aaron a bit, who believes that both No-Gi and Gi are technical, just different.

He asks if I believe his instructor actually made a good point or not? and if I think that Gi is more technical than No-Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Here’s what I think…

The Worlds Most Dangerous Gi

Today we have a question from Nathan, who sends me an email, and asked:

“Chewy what is the worst screw job you’ve seen in a Brazilian jiu-jitsu competition.”

Well, after training BJJ for so long and watching so many matches, you might be surprised that I have seen a ton of “screw jobs”.

BJJ competitions tend to be famous for egregious calls in tournaments, which can be pretty annoying as an athlete, coach, or even spectator who is trying to understand the sport.

In this video, I share one bad call that I have experienced both as a coach and then one particularly bad call I experienced as an athlete in a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu competition as a Blue Belt.

Hope you find these ideas useful.

Also, let me know down in the comments below if you’ve gotten any horrible calls and let me know what they were.

A Subtle Way of Quitting During Rolling in BJJ

Today’s video comes from a guy, who we will call Bob, that has been training for a little over a year and says he really enjoys BJJ, even stating that it’s really helped him with some mental issues.

Fortunately, or unfortunately, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu also opened him up to aversity that he wasn’t used to. For example, he found out that he is a quitter. Whenever things start getting tough in the rolls, he just gives up. By the way, these are his words, not mine.

When his coaches initially noticed the issue, they kind of gave him a pep talk. However, over some time they just stopped trying.

His question to me is if I have any advice on how to overcome the mental block that he recently discovered when he trains BJJ, and how he can grow his “fighting spirit.”

So, in this video I’ll answer his questions and tell you guys about how I personally had to develop my own “fighting spirit” and grit through BJJ, and even tell exactly what I had to tell myself DAILY to do it. I’ll also share the rough inner dialogue I sometimes had going on in my head after training sessions.

I hope you guys can find these ideas useful.

Basic Double Stack Pass Counter in BJJ

In today’s video I’ll be reviewing a couple options to defend the double stack pass.

One of my guys was having trouble defending it today in class, so I thought I’d share what we discussed here too.

This is a pretty common pass in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, both Gi and No-Gi. In fact, it’s also one of my personal favorite passes.

With that being said, every BJJ technique has counters and defenses & I wanted to show you a few of my favorite options here.

Getting stacked sucks. So, hopefully there’s a few ideas here that you find helpful.

My Health Scare is Over, Now I’m Back to BJJ Training

A few weeks ago, I mentioned that I had an issue where I had to take some time off BJJ and had to go to the Emergency room because of that health issue.

Well, today was my very first training session back in about a month and I could feel it. If you’re older and do BJJ you probably know exactly what I’m talking about.

As you age in BJJ you can really tell the difference that a long break makes. I’m not “old” in the sense of full life. But I am for BJJ. That being said, in my mid 30s I definitely don’t recover the same as I did when I was 25.

Anyways, I wanted to share a couple ideas with you guys in relation to getting back to training BJJ after a serious injury, health issue, or whatever else took you off the mat.

Hopefully you find these ideas useful to you.

This Common Error Can Destroy Your BJJ Performance (Be Ready for It)

Today’s question comes from John who recently had an annoying, but far too common, situation happen to him at a BJJ Tournament.

Sadly, what happen to John will, at some point or another, happen to every Brazilian Jiu-jitsu competitor. I know it’s happened to me plenty of times. And if you’re not ready for the situation it can definitely throw you off and potentially ruin your performance. As was the case with John.

He said he did ok at the competition, but he felt like all the changes threw his game off and he wonders if I’ve ever experienced something like this, and If so, how do I deal with it?

So, in the video I explain an important idea for Brazilian Jiu-jitsu competitions to keep your mindset in the right place and how to deal with unforeseen situations that happen at competitions.

Have you ever been in a similar situation to John? Let me know in the comments below.
