EBI Overtime Rounds and Takedowns w/ a Pro MMA Fighter

Today’s video is a mixture of rolls from one of our training sessions really. We didn’t edit the video much. It’s more of a fly on the wall situation to watch rolling.

The rolling begins with some EBI style rounds where we start in back mount and try to escape and then begin in an armbar position or what they call the spider web.

Afterwards we mix in some full rolling, and you’ll see me doing some wall work takedowns with one of our pro MMA fighters. This is a useful style of grappling to mimic being pinned against a cage wall and trying to fight.

Why You Should Roll with BJJ White Belts Like It’s a Fight

Today’s video is from a BJJ White Belt who’s about 2 years into Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and says that he is always getting injured. His question is whether or not BJJ is even right for him. Possibly he’s too fragile or something.

Now I cannot answer that question, because who knows? I’ve seen some seemingly frail people become expert grapplers while some stout dudes ended up quitting early on.

Instead, I went on to ask him more about his rolling and he said he tries to take things slow and easy during rolling. Now this might seem like a smart idea, and against higher BJJ belts it can be.

But as I’ll explain in the video. Rolling like this against lower belts can be downright dangerous.

Easily Stop Darce & Guillotine Chokes from Half Guard Bottom in BJJ

Do you get submitted with Darce or Guillotine chokes when you try to use Half Guard Sweeps in BJJ?If that’s the case then this video could be helpful to you.

As a half guard player in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu I used to struggle with getting choked from the position. People would dive on my neck and catch the submission. But over the years I’ve found some simple ways to counter their attempts and still maintain good position to get my sweeps.

With that said, the idea in the video is simple. I’ll show you how to prioritize your submission defense and your sweep attempts. I’ll also show you some simple hand fighting ideas that will make it way harder to submit you with a darce or a guillotine choke.

How to Improve Your Speaking & Teaching Ability as a Coach in BJJ or MMA

In today’s video I answer a question from Raymond who is beconing a new MMA coach at his gym. He’s been a student there and is now becoming a coach on some level. His question to me today is about how to get better at speaking and his ability to coach since he’s a bit nervous.

So in the video I discuss some ideas that could help someone become a better teacher/coach whether they’re new or not. These are the same tips that helped me as someone who felt unsure of themself early on as a coach and who used to have a stutter in my late teens. These tips are for Ray who’s going to be an MMA coach. But you could use these tips for teaching in general.

Newbie Tips to Cut Weight for BJJ Comps & Not Kill Yourself in the Process

This is a basic overview for anyone whos trying to drop to a lower weight class or just lose weight and wants to do so without killing themselves in the process.

I say this, because a lot of people in BJJ literally destroy themselves trying to cut weight for Brazilian Jiu-jitsu competitions. And in most cases it isn’t necessary and there is a better way to do things.

So in the video I share some of the simplest weight cutting tips that you can implement to lose weight slowly and intelligently. To lose weight without losing tons of muscle and without destroying your training and performance.

How to Train to be More Aggressive for BJJ & MMA Competitions

Today’s video is a question from a viewer who’s involved in MMA and finds that he is a slow starter. Meaning he allows other people to get the better of him but then turns it on after. This is an issue many people have faced, including yours bearded.

So in today’s Q&A video I share some ideas of how I went from being a slow started in BJJ competitions and MMA and into an aggressive fighter/grappler from the moment a match started.

My Secret for High Percentage Armlocks from Side Control in BJJ

Want to increase the finish rate with armlocks from side control? Then this video is for you. In this video I’m going to show you my Arm Scoop position from side control along with a ton of important details for finish straight arm locks, kimuras and wrist locks. This is one of my highest percentage attacks in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. I’ve done some form of these submissions since I was a White Belt in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and have used them all the way to Black belt.

But as I’ll share, the most important part is the setup. If you use the arm scoop position like I show in the video, you’ll find that it’s so much easier to catch and finish your BJJ submissions from side control.

Rolling with My BJJ Students + Q&A At the End

He Feels like a Fake Purple Belt Because of White Belt Memories

In today’s Q&A I answer a question from a newer BJJ Purple Belt who says he feels like a phony. He says that when he was a White Belt the Purple Belts in his gym were absolute monsters, and he doesn’t feel like he’s a monster. He feels like he’s no where near their skill.

In this video I share some ideas on this common imposter syndrome thing. I also share why in the case of the person asking today’s question, your view of a belt from the ideas of a newbie can skew the reality of the situation.

I know this from experience as a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu practitioner myself and as a coach who’s had numerous students say the same thing.

5 BJJ Back Mount Escapes in 3 Minutes

Get stuck in back mount during rolling? Happens to everyone in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu at some point. In today’s video I share 6 different ideas on escaping back mount. Some of them are a little funkier than others but I’ve been able to use all of them at some point against tough opponents during rolls.

The escapes include options against top arm side, bottom arm side, and body triangles.

At the end I share a simple back and forth drill you could use as a warm up or to get extra reps in.
