leg trip takedown

This Effective Takedown Addresses A Big Problem In BJJ When Standing

Today’s BJJ technique is one of my absolute favorite takedowns for Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. I demonstrate the technique in both gi and no gi.
One of the big reasons I love it so much is because many BJJ practitioners have a very passive and defensive stance with takedowns. Usually this is where their butt is waaaay back. This makes it hard for shots and takedowns.

So in today’s video I’ll show you how to do an arm drag to inside trip that I’ve been able to hit at just about every BJJ competition in the last 5 years. I also show more details and setups to this BJJ take down in my Wrestling for BJJ series which you can check out at the link. https://www.chewjitsu.net/w4bjj
I personally love anything that works off the arm drag in BJJ since no matter the defensive posture. You can always get a grip somewhere on their arms.
Hope the takedown helps and thanks for the request Michael!

new gym woes

Blue Belt Struggling to Keep Up with Skill Level of a New BJJ Gym

Today’s video question comes from a Blue Belt who recently moved to a new BJJ gym and doesn’t feel up to the standard of the new gym. His question to me was how to deal with the situation he’s facing.

In this video I give 3 different ideas as to what could be going on and as to why he doesn’t feel up to the standard of his new Brazilian Jiu-jitsu gym. And if you’re moving to a new gym hopefully the ideas are useful to you as well!

This Happens When The BJJ Myth meets The Reality of Rolling

Today’s BJJ question comes from a young jacked guy who said he’s doing really well but experiencing a problem. That problem being that some of the guys he’s beating make excuses about his strength.

This is a common problem in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu where people have been conditioned to believe that technique is all that matters. And then when they run into a strong or athletic person they realize it’s not the case. That strength and athleticism plays a huge role.

In the video I answer his question and address why his more experienced teammates are so frustrated. And why it’s more to do with the person than it is with him.

If you’re in a similar situation with your training partner then I hope this video helps!

Are These Strongman vs Black Belt Youtube Videos Bad for BJJ ?

Today’s video is a question about strongman competitors rolling with BJJ Black Belts and UFC fighters. The question comes from a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu practitioner who said he watched the videos and noticed everyone in the comments saying that BJJ doesn’t really work. And during the videos the BJJ Black Belts struggled with the strongmen.

So his question is, are these videos with strongman competitors and BJJ Black Belts bad for the sport of Jiu-jitsu since it makes it look ineffective?

In the video I’ll explain my thoughts and give you some ideas to chew on.

Oh and one thing I didn’t mention is, these videos are people just having fun. It’s not a serious competition.

guard sweep 2

5 Open Guard Sweeps Every BJJ White Belt Should Learn As Early As Possible

I recently did a video title: 4 Full Guard Sweeps Every BJJ White Belt Should Learn As Early As Possible. It was fairly popular and several people asked for some open guard sweeps as well.

So in today’s video I’m going to show you 5 different BJJ sweeps from 5 different open guards that even a beginner or White Belt can use. I say this because I learned all of these sweeps as a beginner. And I teach them to my students who are newer with lots of success. I can also say that I’ve used every one of these sweeps in rolling or competition against Black Belts as well, so they’re effective at any level.

Hopefully after watching you’ll have some extra ideas on open guard options in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.

Oh and if you’d like to watch the original video I did from full guard.

bjj black belts

How Do BJJ Black Belts Get Their Stripes & Promotions ?

Today’s video is a quick video about how BJJ Black Belts get their stripes and promotions. So in the video I share the basics of how I’ve been promoted and how the common stripe/belt promotion practice takes place for Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Black Belts.

Now, I’m sure some systems could be different than the one I outline here. But this is the basic time requirements I’m familiar with and have been exposed to in my training.

In the video I also share how old I’ll be when I can get the Red/Black and the final Red Belt of Jiu-jitsu. Since I was promoted to Black Belt when I was 26, I’ll be eligible for the final rank of BJJ when I am 89 years old.

. . . Let’s see if I even make that.

Anyways, hope the video was useful to you or at the very least maybe slightly entertaining based on how old I’ll be to get a Red Belt.

P.S Here’s the chart I was following.

Caught a Weird Armlock in This BJJ Training Session (Chewjitsu Rolling)

In this no gi BJJ rolling session you’ll see some fun action. It starts off with me rolling with one of my White Belts. I was working for my back take series from the Double Under guard pass (he knew it) and it led to one of the funkiest submissions I’ve hit in a while.

The next roll was with one of my game Purple Belts who pushed the pace on me and caught me with some good moves of his own, like his guard passing. It’s always a good moment as a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu coach when one of your students gives you a solid challenging roll. For me it means I’m doing my job of helping my students improve.

The next roll was with one of my White Belts who is pretty scrappy. Around the time of filming this he did a great job at a competition. I know he likes leg locks so I played the legs a bit with him. Just for the record I teach White Belts leg locks and don’t mind them using them as they learn how to work them properly.

The final roll is with one of my Black Belts, and a guy I’ve known since I was a White Belt. He’s a strong dude and so anytime I make a slight error he is usually able to take advantage of it. The roll shows some good back and forth action. I tried to catch a few submissions I was working on but they weren’t there.

Hope you enjoy the training video!

only roll with high belts

Will Training with Higher Belts Hurt a White Belt’s BJJ Progress ?

If you’re forced to roll with higher belts in BJJ, will it hinder your progress? This is the question today from a White Belt who’s recently been placed into a higher level Brazilian Jiu-jitsu class.

Here’s what happened. His BJJ coach divided the training groups up due to covid concerns. He had the White Belts go to 1 class time. And then the colored belts (Blue, Purple, Brown, Black) to another. Well our friend was the lone White Belt who got plugged into the higher belt class.

So his question is about whether or not this situation will hinder his Jiu-jitsu training.

In this video I share some perspectives from my own experience in the hopes that they’ll be useful to anyone in a similar situation.

I hope the video is useful to you!

Thanks for watching.

Young MMA fighter wants to know the best job for training full time

Question today from a young lad who’s wanting to pursue a martial arts based career. . .

Here’s the question.

===================

Hey Chewy, I’m a fan from the UK, BJJ blue belt and amateur MMA fighter looking to turn pro in the future. I was wondering if you had any advice for the best jobs to work to support the training necessary for getting to a high level in jiu jitsu and MMA respectively (i.e. twice a day). What kinds of jobs best support this lifestyle and how did you balance work and training when you were coming up? Really appreciate the time and love all your stuff!

===================

Thanks for the question Henry.

Someone asked me the other day what BJJ and martial arts in general have taught me. And 1 of the most important lessons I’ve learned and really come to understand from BJJ, Wrestling, Boxing and MMA is this.

Knowing my priorities and staying focused on them even when I’m told they aren’t the correct thing to do.

Priorities are important but most people don’t give them much thought. People really never separate what are their own desires vs what’s been pressed upon them by society.

When I was younger I avoided doing a lot of the things my other friends were doing (getting credit cards, partying, buying brand new cars, buying expensive clothes, etc). I even turned down a high paying job because it interfered with my training.

Now to some this would seem a bare existence that they wouldn’t want. And that’s ok. It’s what I wanted. Big emphasis on the “I” there.

Now, I’ll admit, for a time I broke this focus and bought into all the material trappings that I was told I “should” want and with almost immediate regret went into reverse to get away from them to get back to “MY” mission.

Nowadays, I’m blessed, I make a good living doing BJJ and running a business. My vision didn’t play out exactly how I thought it would. In fact, it’s worked out even better than I imagined. And this happened because I kept my focus on what was important to me.

Rolling back around to you my British friend.

I think the type of job you do is less important than you maintaining your training priorities above all else. If it’s what you really want.

This means you might skip a better paying job because another one has a better schedule for training or avoid certain relationships because it interferes with your goals. You might wear cheap clothes and drive around in a beater of a car for a while. (I did all these things)

Oh and be prepared for people to try and cut you down and tell you you’re an idiot for chasing such a far-fetched goal (I know this all too well). But if it’s what you want, stay the course and be focused.

And this goes for anyone who has some goal that they want.

If you’re one of those people who has a goal that you’re chasing after that people don’t quite understand. That’s ok. Stay focused and let the results later speak for themselves.

And here’s something else.

Even if you fail. The simple act of chasing after something will make you a stronger person with qualities that can aid you should you have to pivot into something different later on.

Hope that helps give you something to chew on for today.

Talk to you tomorrow.

Oh and just a heads up. I’ll be in Florida doing a couple of seminars in March. If you’re interested check the details on the link below.

axe sweep

The Most Effective Pendulum Sweep Setup I Had Early On in BJJ

The other day I was messing around with an old Pendulum Sweep setup that I don’t really use much anymore, but that used to be one of my favorite options from Full Guard as a BJJ White Belt. Now I don’t use it much anymore because I branched off into other Jiu-jitsu positions like Half Guard and Butterfly Guard.

That said, it’s still a great setup that you can add to your Brazilian Jiu-jitsu game in order to work towards things like the Pendulum Sweep or even back takes.

I called the position “The Axe” primarily because the point of the elbow and configuration of the arm makes me think of an axe.

I also show 2 ways to get into the position.

So if you’re on the search for a setup to the Pendulum Sweep from Full Guard or just looking for some useful Full Guard sweeps to throw into the mix then I hoped the video was useful!

Thanks for watching.
