Is BJJ Worth All Injuries ?
/in BJJ, Recovery /by Jack CToday’s video comes from a newer BJJ White Belt who’s wondering if BJJ is worth all the injuries. He says he’s curious because he sees all the “old timers” in his gym and realizes they’ve all had an injury or two.
And as a young guy who’s just getting into Brazilian Jiu-jitsu he’s wondering, is it worth it?
Now while this question is super subjective. I try to give the young guy something to think about regarding the ideas as to whether or not BJJ is worth the toll it can potentially take on the body.

Versatile BJJ Armlock to Counter Opponents Who Crowd Your Full Guard
/in BJJ, Guard Passes, Submissions, Training /by Jack CHow To Play Your Mistakes The “Right” Way (Idea from Jazz & BJJ)
/in BJJ, Inspiration, Off the Mats /by Jack CToday’s Sunday video (which is my not-so-BJJ videos) I share an idea I recently heard on the Lex Frimad podcast. It’s an idea about a situation that happened with some famous Jazz musicians.
I’m a big fan of comparing other forms of art to Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and the combat arts. In many cases they’re littered with parallels. Jazz for instance dips heavily into improvisation which is something that happens with us in martial arts. In many cases we have to improvise on the fly.
And the lesson from the Jazz story in the video has a parallel that I find true for my BJJ training and life off the mats.
You can listen to the podcast episode here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cC1Hs…
Thanks for watching and I’ll chat with you next time.

Skinny BJJ Beanpole Struggling to Hold Top Position on Bigger Guys
/in Beginners, BJJ, Defenses Escapes Counters, Funny /by Jack CEffective Stretches to Fix Tight Hips for BJJ & Improve Guard Retention
/in Recovery, Tips, Training /by Jack CToday’s video is a series of stretches I like using after BJJ training to help improve recovery from hard rolling sessions and improve guard retention abilities.
I started doing these back in 2020 to loosen up my hips while I had some free time away from the gym. I’m a person who’s not the most flexible. And by doing these stretches on a regular basis I found my hips became more flexible, my guard retention improved and I believe they help with my recovery after training.
I’m sharing them with you because I find a lot of people who come in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu classes have super tight hips. Tight hips are a problem in BJJ for a lot of reasons. And being effective off of your back is one of them.
So in the video I’ll show you the stretches and explain why I use them during.
Hope the video and the stretches help you!

The 3100 Calorie Diet I’m Using to Fuel BJJ, Lifting & Lose Weight
/in Food and Cooking, Lifestyle /by Jack CToday’s video is a full day of eating and a look at my 3100 calorie diet I’m currently using fuel my BJJ training, lifting and to lose weight. Last year I leaned out for a BJJ competition and it worked out great. I started at 211lbs and made it down into the mid 190s. This time around I figured I’d take you along for the ride.
The 3100 calorie diet is high protein, high carb and moderate in fats. I know for some high carbs sounds blasphemous when it comes to losing weight. But I personally feel great fueling up with carbs and training hard. That said, use whatever diet you personally prefer. I’m just sharing what I’m doing.
The diet is also 5 meals a day. Last year I was doing around 6 meals a day and it was a lot to squeeze in with my busy schedule. So I wanted to see how 5 would feel. So far so good.
Once I get down to be a little leaner I’m going to start working up slowly and increase my weight a little. And again. I’ll keep you filled in on how things are going.
If you’re interested in getting a custom diet plan you can use the same coach I have. Again, I get no kick back or anything like that. He’s just been super helpful to me and so I figured I’d share with you guy.

How To Avoid Injuries When Rolling with Wild New White Belts in BJJ
/in Beginners, BJJ, Tips /by Jack CToday’s video is an idea that came from questions I received from both BJJ White Belts and higher belts who are rolling with brand new White Belts in their gym.
Basically, the White Belts are injuring people on accident or being super spazzy and feeling bad about it.
On the flip side the higher belts are worried about getting injured with the less experienced students.
So in this video I share an idea for higher belts in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu to consider when rolling with new BJJ students. It’s an idea I learned the hard way after getting elbowed, kicked, slammed over the years. But if you take the lesson home it’ll allow you to roll with newer students to help teach them and at the same time avoid being injured.
Thanks for watching and I hope the video helps.

Blue Belt Gets a “4 Finger Oil Check” at BJJ Competition
/in Beginners, BJJ, Tips /by Jack CToday’s video is a question about dirty grapplers in BJJ competitions. By dirty grapplers I mean people who are willing to cheat and bend rules in order to win.
The question comes from a Blue Belt who was recently competing against a tough wrestler and got oiled checked when he sunk in a submission.
Now I was skeptical because I like to assume most people wouldn’t do something like this. But after seeing a video and picture of it I have a hunch this person knew exactly what they were doing.
Anyways, in the video I share my own experience of dealing with dirty grapplers, how I responded, how I would respond differently now and how I would encourage anyone to respond if someone does something that is flagrantly cheating.
Hopefully the video helps.

Some BJJ coaches would see this as disrespectful (Here’s why I don’t)
/in BJJ, Inspiration, Off the Mats /by Jack C
Today’s BJJ video comes from a recent situation inside my gym. I share it because the core of what’s going on is something that helped me over the years with motivation and my ability to track my overall progress (which can be tough to do in BJJ).
Now it’s going to seem maybe slightly disrespectful to some and it might go against some of the motivational type stuff you’ve heard in the past. But I can tell you from my experience, from those of others and from countless biographies I’ve consumed. It’s a great tip for motivation and tracking your overall progress.
Hope the tip helps!
