How To Transform Your Sloppy Choke into a Tight Strangle

When you watch a good grappler in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu or MMA. You’ll sometimes notice that they seem to let go of a submission or technique even though it looks like it’s there.

Like a choke for example. There are numerous BJJ matches and fights I’ve watched where the grappler seems like they had a choke / strangle technique sunk in but for some reason they let it go.

This is because they could feel that it wasn’t quite right. And this is why in BJJ, grappling and pretty much any fighting sport. You’re always searching for the right feeling of a technique or movement. Because in the heat of the moment you’re not going to be able to determine whether or not it’s correct by looking at all the little details. You just don’t have time.

Instead, you’ll know it’s on by having an intuitive feel of if it’s sunk in correctly or not.

In the video I’ll explain a situation where you can develop this feeling with chokes in BJJ. This will help you transform sloppy chokes that borderline on neck cranks into tight strangles.

Hope the video helps!

Improve Your BJJ Techniques Faster by Rolling like Rickson Gracie

Recently on the Chewjitsu Podcast we had Rickson Gracie Black Belt Henry Akins on. You can listen to the podcast in full using the link below.

https://youtu.be/zfi7TxlyAVs

During the podcast there were several amazing nuggets of information about training practices and techniques. 1 of which is something I do all the time, force my students to do and is something Henry said Rickson would do all the time.

This particular style of rolling is a great way to boost creativity with technique and further develop your own systems of BJJ. And I believe if you roll like the way I explain in the view you’ll improve your BJJ techniques faster as there is focus to your training.

Hopefully after watching the video you’ll understand what I mean and have some ideas for your own training.

A Blind Black Belt was my Toughest Training Partner as a Brown Belt

Can you become a good grappler if you’re blind? That’s the question coming to us today from a guy who’s just getting into Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and is experiencing an illness that is causing him to go blind.

In the video I’ll share several examples of grapplers I’ve met in BJJ and wrestling who are blind. I’m doing so to encourage our friend and anyone else getting into grappling who’s blind.

Thanks for watching the video.

Rear Naked Choke VS Face Cranks During a BJJ Roll in Training

In today’s video I answer a question about using the face crank vs the rear naked choke during BJJ training.

I’ll explain my thoughts on it and why I’ll use one of the other in a normal Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training session. I’ll also explain some of my personal goals and focus in a normal BJJ training session and during rolling.

Hopefully the video helps you if you had a similar question about face cranks and rear naked chokes in Jiu-jitsu.

How To Counter the Single Leg & Take the Back in BJJ

If you’d like to learn more takedowns and defenses specifically for BJJ, then check the link below.

https://www.chewjitsu.net/w4bjj

Recently I was filming a special single leg section for my Wrestling for BJJ series with my student Brandon (a 3X NAIA champion). During the filming he showed several techniques from wrestling that had some super cool applications to BJJ.

So in today’s video I have Brandon teach a slick Single Leg takedown counter to Back Mount. This is a counter he used in wrestling to pin someone. But when he showed it to me I instantly saw the usefulness of it for Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and getting to the back.

So if you’re looking for a single leg defense that can help you take the back. Then enjoy today’s video.

Hopefully the technique gets your gears turning for your next training session.

The Depressing Side to Achieving Your Goals in BJJ

There is a danger to achieving your goals in BJJ or any endeavor you find yourself in. And that’s what we’re going to focus on for today’s video.

The question asker is Nina who says she’s in a situation where she’s accomplished several goals she had and now she’s in a situation where she lacks the same motivation and drive she used to have.

Her question to me is how can she get that drive back in her life and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training. So in this video I’ll explain the natural rhythm we all experience as we accomplish our goals and the process around that.

If you’re experiencing a loss of motivation and focus after hitting a big goal I hope this video helps!

If you struggle passing Half Guard then today’s video is for you. In today’s BJJ technique video I’m going to give you a simple strategy to chew on. It’s simple, but effective. I’ve been using this strategy ever since I was a BJJ White Belt and have used it effectively even as a Black Belt.

The key to making this work (as I’ll show you in the video) is to set up multiple threats starting with the armlock. This could be a keylock, kimura, straight armlock, whatever you’re best with.

What happens is the person will be forced to focus on the submission threat which then diverts attention away from retaining the Half Guard position.

If you don’t already do this, you should. It’s been one of my most effective ways to pass guard and it’s something you’ll see a lot of people doing in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.

Hope the video helps.

This White Belt is Getting Turned Down for Rolls at his BJJ Gym

If you’re a newer BJJ White Belt you may have experienced a situation where maybe someone refused to roll with you. And especially in the gym it can feel awkward and seem like a negative thing. This is the situation one of our friends has run into when he’s trained in different martial arts.

He says he’s gone to several different martial arts and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu gyms, and he feels like there are cliques that develop and he gets left out. These gyms talk about being a family but it doesn’t seem that way to him.

In this video I explain why your gym may in fact be like a family, in many different aspects and why you don’t always want to interpret someone not rolling with you as a bad thing. Our gut instinct is to take it as a bad thing, but it’s not always the case.

Hope the video helps you if you’re in this situation or at the very least gives you an idea to chew on.

Common BJJ White Belt Mistake when Rolling with Coaches

In today’s video I answer a question from Asa (a BJJ White Belt) who’s struggling to roll with his Black Belt coach.

In the video I’ll explain the mistake he’s making when he’s rolling with his coach. It’s a mistake I believe we’ve all made at some point or another. And this mistake is trying to impress our coaches by rolling really well or trying to impress them. I’ll explain why this is a mistake in the video.

And if you’re a White Belt in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu I hope this video makes sense and helps you with your training if you ever roll with your coach.
