21 things about me you probably didn’t know (It started off as 10, oops)

  1. I’m a self-proclaimed coffee snob and refuse to drink crappy coffee.
  2. I’m a light weight when it comes to alcohol. Seriously, a few beers will make me all sorts of silly.
  3. I love Ludovico Einaudi’s music, it’s fantastic.
  4. Fantastic has been called my “F Word” by others because I use it when I think something is really awesome, or as I would say, fantastic.
  5. I got the news that my mother had passed away about 60 seconds after receiving my black belt.
  6. I love maps, especially old maps that show the world carved up in an unfamiliar pattern from years ago. A 19th century map hangs in my living room.
  7. I’m a history nerd and love chatting with people about it. That’s why my “lucky” students get surprise 5 minute history lectures after class.
  8. I did a cycle of steroids once when I was 21.
  9. I used to be a really chubby kid. I was 5’9 and 235lbs in 10th grade.
  10. I was bitten by a brown recluse and have a scar on my left leg from where the surgeon had to remove tissue.
  11. I tore my lateral meniscus in my right knee a month after the spider bite.
  12. I didn’t own a t.v. from 2004-2013. I bought the t.v. primarily for functions in the gym. I hate television. Its brain numbing.
  13.  I grew up very poor (financially) as a kid.
  14. I don’t like wearing athletic shoes or clothes when I’m not working out.Image
  15. As a 9 year old kid I named my German shepherd Maximus after reading about the roman consul / dictator Quintus Fabius Maximus. We called him Max for short.
  16. I love brunch and breakfast food. In fact I go out to brunch almost every Sunday. Louisville has a pretty good food scene so I’m lucky. I’m still a fat kid at heart.
  17. After BJJ and MMA my favorite sport is probably Strongman.
  18. I love Maine and think it’s a beautiful place to visit.
  19. I listen to audiobooks and podcasts when I drive. All either history or self-help nonfiction type stuff.
  20. I got my nickname from a friend who was mad at me when I spazzed on him during a roll as a white belt. He called me “big dumb wookie” which led to “Chewbacca” and then eventually “Chewy.” Until things like Facebook most people didn’t know my real name. Oh and once when I was straight out of college I introduced myself as Chewy at a job interview. I was so used to introducing myself as that from the gym.
  21. I press my nose in with my index finger when I am thinking.

Oh yeah, Dan Carlin is awesome. I take it you listen to them too? Another good one is the History Extra podcast. It’s relatively short when comparing to Dans but it’s good stuff.

Yea Dan’s work is like a series of books in one podcast. My favorite series of his, has to be the Roman one, just so much of their culture is kind of like others today.

I will look into the history extra podcast, and let you know what I think of them.

Yeah “Death Throes of the Republic” was excellent. I’m enjoying the World War 1 series he is doing now. I’ve read tons on the subject and the time period from 1870 to 1919 in Europe is just insane. Everything is changing so fast and it was essentially the end of monarchies with any real power.

Have you ever read Rubicon by Tom Holland?

No I have not read that book, would you say it’s worth looking into?

I have so many books on my to read list, that I will get to it at some point. At the moment, I am reading the Tao of Jeet Kune Do by Bruce Lee, then its on to wrestling tough.

Absolutely, especially if you’re into that late republic time period which Dan covers in his death throes series. If I could make 2 others, Augustus and Cicero are fun reads, and after reading Rubicon you’ll be familiar with them.

I know the feeling of an ever growing reading list. I’m right there with you! What’s the wrestling book you have queued up?

I will sure to put those on my list then, thanks for the tip.

The book is called Wrestling Tough by Mike Chapman, and in my last comp I realized that nerves just got the better of me. So I have been researching and looking into sports psychology books. I have just finished The Art of Mental Training by DC Gonzalez.

It can came off as a bit Bullshitty, but I did still get some nice tips out of it.

I’ve never read that but man I know all about the nerves. Hopefully you can use those tips to success your next time around.
